The Mercat de la Boqueria (Boqueria Market), at 30m from the Hotel Sant Agustí in Barcelona city centre, has an abondance of fresh food. It´s one of the important place in Barcelona's history. Located right of the Ramblas, in front of one of the gates of the old city wall (Pla de la Boqueria) it was initially a traveling market. As the Rambla grew in it importance as a social gathering place it was set in the best place for fruit and vegetable traders from local towns and farms nearby to attract large numbers of passers-by and locals and sell their products.

The metal roof was added in 1914 and from there on the Boqueria market started to improve and modernize. Throughout the years a lot of decoration has been added to the structure. And now La Boqueria has become a Barcelona landmark, more than any other market in the Catalan capital. The market is a must-see attraction for tourists. It encompasses the real spirit and culture of Barcelona and its people, and is at the roots of many family traditions. A lot of the sales men are third or fourth generation actually.

Besides the historical value it is a beautiful sight. The abundance of fresh food which is not found much anymore in the big cities of Europe. The offer varies from greatly: fresh fish and seafood; salty fish; tinned food; butchery and offal; birds; game and eggs; fruits and vegetables; herbs; delicatessen; breads and pastries; restaurants; artisan products; charcuterie; farmers' shops; wine; etc. All the food is openly displayed which will surely make you work up an appetite.
